Finding the right fashionwear for your next pageant

Fashionwear can be one of the hardest outfits to find within pageantry as you want to stand out and be different, but it’s hard to find the outfit that really speaks to you. You can buy off the rail but there is always a chance of someone else having the same outfit. You could have it custom made but what ideas in your head may not translate to paper. There is so much inspiration everywhere, but you need to find what suits you, your age and body shape.

The High/Low

This is one of the most staple pageant fashionwear outfits as it’s the easiest to work with on stage, looking amazing in photos but often can be too overworked. A good high low will flow with you, a bit of arm swishing is great but not when every single step is a swish over and over, it just looks messy. Also if you are holding the material all the time it doesn’t look natural and takes away from your walk. The high low can suit all body types as well, you can have a high low with shorts, or a pantsuit or skirt as well, see what suits your shape. I think that a dress high low looks great on a junior teen, shorts for teen/miss and as you approach mrs and ms a jumpsuit is the perfect balance.

Of course there are no rules but when I see a junior teen in a jumpsuit high low it makes them look much older than they are, when at their age they can wear bright colours and have fun swishing their fashionwear! The great thing about this fashionwear idea is that you can easily buy a jumpsuit/playsuit/dress from an online store and then get a detachable high low skirt made! Alternatively you can use an old evening gown and turn it into fashionwear! Lots of ideas can come of it!!

The cocktail dress

Before high lows, fashionwear was cocktail dresses, which sometimes was the actual name of the round. Cocktail dresses can go one way or the other, personally I feel they are suited for more junior teen/ teen level as they are cute, girlie and you can play around with the skirt. Of course there are adult cocktail dresses that aren’t so “puffy” and I’ve seen some amazing cocktail dresses that have a feather bottom (so doesn’t stick out and give less shape).

¾ length cocktail dresses or 50 style swing dresses are also a great fashion wear for the older lady, it gives a vintage vibe but also suits all different body shapes! Get a dress that suits you, the right colour and the right length! Remember what might look good on one pageant girl can look completely different! If the girl is really tall and you are short, the length is going to look different which could make your legs look shorter and kill the fashion vibe, the same goes for us ladies who have a bigger bottom than most. Dresses ride up, or the bottom takes some of the length out of the dress so be wary of bodycon fashionwear! Also be cautious of two pieces showing too much midriff, I would avoid if you are a junior teen or teen and for the older contestants be carful about flashing too much flesh, it all depends on the system you are competing in.

Thinking outside the box

There have been some amazing fashionwear on stage, some involving tassels and bodysuits, interchangeable dresses, capes instead of high lows, some have linked it to their jobs (Celena at inspiration wore her riding gear as inspiration wear!), You have to make sure you get the right amount of glamour with the outfit. I love tassels but there is a fine line between pageantry and looking like a cowboy on the range, the same goes for interchangeable dresses, it needs to work and change into something amazing with the right timing.

If you are competing in a pageant, look at the past fashionwear’s of the queens and see what worked with them, if there are any videos of the finals, watch and study!! See how the girls work those trains or tassels, how they pose and walk. Of course I will always recommend a coach, especially one who has experience in the system you are competing in as they know what that system is looking for and what works. Fashionwear is meant to be fun, sassy and powerful!

Remember to dress for your shape, try on different versions of outfits to see what suits you, and don’t just go on what the photos look like! Have fun and remember to rock that runway!
