How to avoid being a “crown chaser”

We all love competing in pageants, and I would be on that stage every weekend if time allowed it! However, when it comes to competing, you set yourself apart from the other pageant girls and not in the best way, if you look like a “crown chaser”. What is that you ask?

A crown chaser is typically a pageant girl/boy who enters several natural pageants with the aim of winning as many titles as possible, not considering the pageant system on their sash but rather the crown that would be placed on their head. The reason I put Natural pageants, is because the sole aim of a Glitz pageant is to get the biggest crown you can get, there are no ties to that one system and its just a fun, glitz filled day for all contestants! This type of pageant is perfect for contestants who want to just have fun on stage, not worry about the appearances and money behind it, and that they aren’t tied down to compete in just one system.

Now, this is not to say to not enter different pageants, but in the world of social media where the judges of these pageants can see everything you upload, it gives a bad impression as it shows you’re not dedicated what you could to the sash you are wearing. Here are a few examples and how to avoid:
1.       Never double sash on an event! If you have entered different pageants at the same time, it is the most disrespectful thing you could do to both directors than wear both sashes to one event at the same time, or even worst take the same two pictures but with different sashes on. Ask yourself, which of the pageants are benefitting from this? The reason you have a regional sash is to promote yourself and that title that you are wearing, to make appearances to count to the end goal of that national title. If you have the judges on Facebook, which you will never know who is judging in a few months’ time, they would have seen you post two different titles and ask themselves if you really have the dedication to commit full time to a national title. Appearances are meant to be promoting that pageant system, and it just gets watered down if you pull out three or four different sashes.

2.       Competing in a pageant and wearing another pageants sash after the judging is something that should NEVER happen! Imagine putting all your time and efforts into one pageant, giving it your all and then the crown is placed on the contestant’s head who was just wearing another pageant title sash in the breaktime. For one, that doesn’t classify as an appearance as you just represented a completely different pageant, and two, that poor director who has invested a lot of their money to see you disregard their pageant completely when you put on another regional sash.

3.       If you are a national title holder, then DON’T enter another pageant until you hand over that title! We all love a big crown, but it’s the meaning behind it. If you’ve won a title and then decide to enter another pageant because the prize list is even bigger, then you should give your title to your first runner up. It’s unfair to hold more than one title, when you make appearances and you list all the different titles you hold, there is no commitment to one system. You should always check your contract and ask your director. The same goes if you are a national title holder and start up your own pageant, your first job is to promote your own title and encourage others to follow in your footsteps, it should not be taking contestants from that pageant for your own. You should have respect for your director, taking a national title is the same as having a full-time job!

4.       If you have entered a variety of pageants, you should sit down and look at the pros and cons of each different pageant. Is it a pageant system you want to represent if you were to win the overall title? Are there any further stages of the competition like international that may conflict with your other title hopes? Have a look at the queens of that system and see what they have been doing, are they proactive in their title reign or have they just won and put the crown on the shelf. A good system will have their queens promote the system but also themselves. Are the directors engaging and encouraging? Is their ethos something that reflects your own? From personal experience, you are more likely to gain that dream title by sticking to one pageant title as you have more time to dedicate yourself, a better reputation as a pageant queen and the judges behind the scenes will respect this and not have any prejudgement going into the finals. If you need pageant practice, hire a pageant coach rather than use another system for the ultimate prize.

If you truly want that title, after paying the high sponsorship costs, travel to the venue, training and outfits, then you dedicate that time to that one title. However, no-one can tell you what to do on your pageant journey so whatever you decide, the choice is yours and good luck on your title hunt!
