How to be a perfect queen

Disclaimer: There is no such thing as perfect, however there are so many pageant queens which woman look up and aspire to be like them in their titleholder year. The reason they are so respected and looked up to, is because of how they act during their titleholder year. Here are some tips on how to make the most of that national title (this can also apply to regional as well):

1.       Respect your director

Your director and pageant system have put all their faith in you as their winner, from paying international fees, making sure you get the best promotion you can get and giving you the platform to really promote yourself. If you win, you should be given a contact so read these contracts and make sure you follow them! This could be minimum appearances or not to enter another pageant whilst you are reigning queen. These are in place for a reason to protect both your self’s and the brand. Your director and sister queens will become your best friends over the case of the year, but if you feel they are being unreasonable or the demands are too high, keep it all in private. Remember you DON’T have to carry on as the reigning queen if you feel this way, you should feel proud and want to represent the system and do your director proud. Look at all the angles.

2.       Be mindful of your social media

Social media can be both a blessing and a curse to a queen. On the one hand it gives you the opportunity to reach out to people you might not have ever met in reality, but then it also gives people the chance to see what you put on your Facebook if it’s “queen worthy”. In the age where screenshots can do some damage, try and keep the swearing down, as well as the crazy drinking and inappropriate photos. Remember if you have a lot of pageant people on your Facebook, you never know who is going to be judging you at your next pageant. If you are a teen and are going out and posting photos with you drinking, others would deem that as breaking the rules because the drinking age is 18. If you are that worried about things on social media, make your profile strictly friends only. Also create yourself a pageant like page where you can keep everything pageant on, it’s a wonderful way of getting your name across and people don’t have to hunt through loads of dog videos to see what kind of appearances and pageant duties you have been doing.

3.       Promote your title

The best queens will forever be talking about their title, about what they have done, about handing over their crown to the next beauty queen, and what they are doing in their year. Make sure you find the perfect balance between pageant life and your personal life; your pageant life shouldn’t take over your life so much that you run yourself into the ground! Grab yourself a diary or calendar and highlight pageant days. Try not to double book yourself or make appearances then don’t turn up on the day, there is nothing worse than a pageant girl not turning up to an event without a good reason and leaving the organisers searching for a replacement or being left disappointed. In your contract you may as stated before, have a minimum appearance to make, so make sure you at least schedule these in, and make sure they are quality appearances. Document your appearances, the more photos the better!! Encourage other finalists to join you, not only promoting that event but also promoting your system and putting the finalists at ease. Start a vlog or blog, let people know about what makes you a queen, put your messages out there! You never know who is watching!!

4.       Be a positive face

Its ok to not be ok, but when you put that sash and crown on you are representing that brand. If you are at an event and someone wants to talk to you, but you blank them, or are aggressive or simple don’t give them the time of day, this reflects badly. You are the queen of that system and will get finalists or potential finalists message you about the pageant or ask you for advice or simply want to talk to you. Of course, messaging at half 11 at night you might not always give the best answers but just explain to the person messaging that it’s a little late and you will answer their questions when you are more awake or when you have more time to dedicate to that question. A simple explanation is better than a rude reply! People will remember rudeness more than kindness, so it’s our role to change that!! Remember we are all human, and we all respect when there are times you aren’t feeling like that queen, just don’t act out or post a million Facebook updates about it which you will regret later.

5.       Dress the part

You are a queen so make the most of this year! Get out those ballgowns, evening wear, all the sequins you can! I truly believe that even from a regional level you should always dress the part as you are still wearing that sash, so for pageant events a gown or dress (it doesn’t matter if you are a national titleholder, if you want to wear an evening gown to a pageant event, girl you do you!), dress for the weather (heels and snow do not mix!) and dress for the right occasion (if it’s a sporty event, you can’t run in heels! Also, if it’s a muddy event you may not want to wear your sash to the whole event as mud is very hard to get out!). Make sure you look presentable, your outfits do not need to be expensive at all (boohoo and Primark are my go to for appearance outfits!), as long as you look the part. These photos will be used for promotional purposes for the organisers of your pageant, as well as the charity events and if you are in a full crown and sash with a tracksuit and trainers, it looks very strange!

The last tip is TO HAVE FUN!!! There is nothing worst than looking back at your year when you do your handover and find you actually didn’t enjoy your time as a titleholder. You want those tears to feel real rather than tears of relief! You spent all that money on outfits, all that time dedicated to the title that your year should be the most relaxed time afterwards (unless you are preparing for internationals when the stress begins again!). Enjoy these moments, cherish your time and wear your crown with pride! You may only have the national title for the year, but you will forever be a queen.
