What is a platform?

A lot of pageant girls will talk about their platform and this is what charity they want to support, or a movement or awareness. The reason they choose this platform alongside pageantry is to use their title for something very personal to them. The term “platform” is more an American term as with their main pageant they will be asked political, factual, personal questions which having a platform will be alongside this. It’s what you chose to do with your title which defines you after all. In the UK the judges will ask you what charity you chose to support, other than the chosen charity for that pageant, rather than your platform.

You don't HAVE to have a platform but you should for these reasons:
1.It’s a great conversation piece for your interview
2.It’s a great way to help using your title
3. It’s a great way of being a positive role model
4. Isn’t that why we enter pageants? To help issues close to our hearts?

Choosing the right platform

Don’t follow the crowd and support something that honestly you don’t really care about, the judges won’t see that passion and emotion which usually co-exists with your platform when you are discussing it. It doesn’t even need to be charity based, it can be a personal challenge, something local but it needs to mean something. Also don’t spread yourself too thin, a good beauty queen helps a variety of causes but a great beauty queen will be highly dedicated to making a chance through her actions.

(#FAB- Fight Against Bullying set up by Emma as her platform)

My platform is mental health awareness. I have the semi colon tattoo on my right hand which will always lead to the question, “what does that mean?” Through pageantry I want to help others like myself, who have suffered with depression, diagnosed with a mental health illness and a survivor of suicide. I’m a great believer in the Time to Talk campaign as well as the Semicolon project. That’s just a small description of my platform, achieving a breakthrough of this is to support local mental health charities, provide counselling, champion others to talk freely, fundraise for a variety of different mental health illness, bullying and abuse charities. Saying that I am still involved in other projects (Project Code Red- Female Homeless and The Beni Bear Club) and help other charities but I have my platform to grow and inspire others.

Being an all rounder queen

So chose something that means something to you, from cancer charities, bullying, body confidence, local movements like the smear for smear. If you aren’t truly committed to any cause then it’s not going to go against you if you just show an interest in other charities and community work.

Remember pageant queens aren't made on the stage but instead on the journey towards the crown (I’m full of these today!). You might find your platform along the way but if you are entering a pageant just to wear sparkly gowns and get a crown then a Glitz style pageant may be more suited to you rather than a natural pageant as there is no extra work needed (apart from routines and outfits, etc). If you still can’t find something from your appearances, do some research.

We live in a age now where you can find so much information from the touch of a button! If you can’t find what you are looking for, maybe there is something missing that you can fill up!

By being passionate about something, it helps give your interview content, it shows the director you are the queen they are looking for but also it helps you as a person and aides others. Through my platform I’ve found that I am not alone, there are other pageant girls who have been in my shoes whether themselves or a loved on. By simply sharing my experience with others, they have shared theirs back and you feel that bond.

There are so many inspirational pageant queens out there from regional to international, if you want to be in their shoes then make sure you have the whole package: Brains and Beauty, Cute yet Compassionate, Friendly yet Fierce! I could go on all da
