What to wear for apperances and interviews

As soon as you put the sash on for your pageant system, whether it’s regional, national or international, you are representing their brand and need to be within their standards. A Lot of girls ask what is the right attire for pageant appearances (for the do’s and don’ts of appearances, check out the pageant appearance note in the note section). Here is a guide of what to wear for whatever type of appearance you are doing, which will tie into Interview wear!

Appearance Wear

Depending on the appearance will depend on the outfit, as a pageant girl you want to stand out from the crowd but of course it has to be practical; for example you can’t wear ten inch heels when you are taking part in a fitness event or walking on uneven grass!

Miss Swansea County Galaxy at Swindon Pride (The Theme was Love)
Themed- For example charity days such as red nose day, sports relief, a certain event, tie in your outfit to that appearance. The photo I’ve used is at the Swindon Pride event where the theme is to be as colourful as possible in celebration (we also carried a 50ft rainbow flag!).

If the dress code is red, wear red. If it’s a black tie event, wear black or at least something long and elegant. If you are holding a charity event, try to wear something that represents the charity like a logo tshirt with the details on, or if it’s a fitness event make sure you are in fitness clothing (you can have sparkly trainers for that added queen sparkle!)
Vision in White: Miss GB Ursula in her sash and crown at the children's hospital
Make sure you are dressed respectfully- Miss Great Britain 2016 is a great example here in one of her appearances. She is in a respectful white dress suited to her figure, smart and to the knee (this would also work as an interview outfit). She looks every bit the regal princess that she is. She is also in her sash and crown. This appearance calls out for her crown and sash, but other events might not so always be wary.

For example if you are attending another pageant they may allow sashes but might not like you wearing crowns. Some pageants don’t even accept other systems sashes so check out the rules first. Also practically if you are doing a running event, leave the crown for the finishing photos, especially if you are doing an abseil (we aren’t doing a crown drop!!)

Miss Teen Beauty UK Megan and Miss Beauty UK Fiona at another pageant
Sparkles are always welcome! If you are being asked to attend an event, the reason is because of your title and what extra glamour you bring to the event. As you can see in this photo Miss Beauty UK 2016- Fiona Johnson was judging hence the evening gown, and Megan Williams- Miss Teen Beauty UK 2016 was attending as a guest hence the shorter dress and heels.

Some events just scream for that extra bit of glamour like shop openings, judging pageants and judging local events, parades (everyone loves a parade!). Just be cautious that you can move in your outfit and also that it doesn’t show too much flesh (unless of course it's something to do with swimming etc!)

Casual doesn’t mean jogging bottoms- Unless you are doing a fitness event, do NOT wear jogging bottoms to an event! You can dress down and still look glam!

Still enough glam to go with the crown and sash but not too dressed down, it’s a good balance. When you are doing an appearance you want to look the best you can, of course work and time can often get in the way, this look is casual yet chic.

At the Armed Forces Day with Jade, wedges and boots for the grass!
Overall- Check out where the event is first to see what shoes to wear (as you can see in this photo myself and Jade Dando - Beauty Queen are in little heels with a flat surface for the grass, and knee length dresses). Also check if the event is inside or outside (because British weather is never predictable).

Make sure you’ve checked the rules of the event in case you can’t wear your crown YET if you have been asked to sash up, get that crown high on that head!! Check that you can move in your outfit, that nothing is see through and it's a respectful length for the event at hand .

Also make sure your face and hair are respectable, you can always chuck your hair up and you don't have to have a full face of makeup but for me personally if I’ve worked a long shift then go straight to an appearance, my youthful face now charges for plastic bags!

Interview Wear

You can apply the same to interview wear, a lot of outfits for interview would work well for appearances. The examples I’m using are going to be Galaxy photos because their interview outfits are always on point (plus the UK do so well over in the Galaxy Pageants Internationals)!

Mrs Galaxy International Sarah in her Interview Outfit, shot by Paul Carroll
As you can see from Mrs. Galaxy ‘s interview wear, you don't have to wear a dress!! This outfit is flattering to her body, great colouring, a little bit of sass with the bow but not too much in your face plus the shoes are nude, peep toe shoes which work well with the jumpsuit. You don’t have the awkward “what if they can see my pants” though when you sit down as your legs are covered!!!

Miss Galaxy England 2016 Zara with Miss Texas Galaxy before International Interviews

As you can see from Miss Galaxy England 2016/17: Zara Ramsay-Nortley she is wearing a Knee Length dress with closed heels, with a bold colour that suits her colouring and an up do for her hair so no risk of hair going into your face when talking in the interview (there is nothing worst!).

Zara obviously knows which colours suit her, so I would try a variety of colours to see which ones suit you, as some may wash you out yet others bring out your features. Also it’s very important about the knee length in the dress, if you have a curvy body (I have a doorstep when it comes to my behind), you risk the dress coming up to your thigh and it ends up being a mini skirt. This means pants flash and no one wants to see that!

Try practicing sitting down in different positions with your dress and see if it rides up or shows anything. Facebook is your friend for this, as well as the sales!!
