How to pick the perfect evening gown for your pageant

(Leah Andrews- Former Miss Teen Galaxy Wales in a stunning evening gown)

The evening dress round is one of the best rounds of a pageant, hands down. It is elegant, classy and makes you feel like the real life princess you are walking onto that stage. This dress is the dress you could win that long deserved crown in, and so it deserves to be the best. This doesn't mean you have to spend thousands of pounds of money you don't have for a gown, it needs to fit you, to suit your body shape and colouring and most importantly you need to be able to walk in it!!!

There are many do's and don't for the evening gown, and coming from judging experience I will share a little with you. When you reach teens your gown NEEDS to touch the floor, you will get marked down if your evening gown is at your ankles as we say it's not how expensive the gown is but how well it fits! If it only reaches your ankles, it is not the right style for you.
You need to be able to WALK in your gown, holding your dress up not only looks strange but doesn't give your walk the polished look that you should have in evening gown.
Also you need to make sure your dress is age appropriate for your category, for example a two piece evening gown for a young teen can be seen as too grown up, as well as revealing gowns which show too much cleavage. Splits in gowns are more suited towards the older teen to miss/ms/mrs. Alternatively if you are a ms or classic age, a bright pink prom gown with bows on is more suited towards a junior miss.

In regards to style, buy a dress that flatters your figure and it not too tight where it doesn't sit right on your hips or on your back. If you don't like your arms in a gown, maybe try wearing a gown with sleeves to make your walk more confident. Pick colours that aren't going to wash out your complexion, you will find a colour that suits you and if you are at a good dress shop they will recommend certain colours to help. Personally I like to wear greens and blues as it brings out my green eyes and goes with my hair (usually red or blonde), I would love to wear yellow but I know my skin tone doesn't suit it as it makes me look too pale. Its seeing what works for your body shape and complexion, also keep in mind if you are going to tan for the pageant as well!!

Be careful about going online and buying a gown, you need to try on dresses and see what they look like on your frame. Alternatively if you can't find THE dress then get a designer to make your dreams come true! There are a few dress makers in the pageant industry that can help you, just make sure that you ask other pageant girls their experience as well as seeing the quality of the dress as getting a dress made you can't just return!

We spoke to Kylie, the owner of Stardust boutique (https://stardustboutique.com/) who has been supplying pageant girls dresses since 2011 (competing in pageants for longer!) about her experience with pageant dress shopping;

"My top tip would be don't chose a dress just because it looks good in a photo, pick a gown that is going to suit your shape. I will personally talk with Each customer for hours and hours until we have found the perfect dress! I am honest with each customer and usually that honesty is appreciated and taken because they know I am doing my utmost with my ten years of experience to help them win. Recently a young lady asked me to choose between two dresses for interview. I told her neither! I guess if I had a sash it would be “miss honesty”. I also ensure my customers get the best price."
Remember, this is the evening gown which you will get your winning moment in, so it needs to be the best fit for you!! If you would like any more advice blogs about pageant topics, let us know what we can help you with!!
