Wearing the right pageant shoe

It’s the question that is on every pageant girl's mind when it comes to planning her stage outfits... shoes. There are an array of different types of shoes but you need to get the right fit. There is nothing worst than watching someone on the stage trying to balance in too high heels and stumbling over themselves. You need to be comfortable in your heels and walk with ease. I’ve seen pageant girls walk so confidently in small heels and get Top Ten and girls in 7 inch heels fall off stage. It’s not a requirement to wear sky high heels! Here are a few top tips to choosing the right shoe.

1. Make sure your shoes fit!
Don’t wear shoes that are too small, if you have open toed shoes it’s going to be obvious and not look right, also they are going to cut the circulation off from your feet if you wear them too long! The same goes if the shoe is too big, you will have a gap at the ankle and can cause you to slip and generally look too big. You want a shoe that will compliment your walk, so chose a shoe that fit’s right.

2. Open or closed toe shoes
Before competing look at past winners and what shoes they are wearing for each round. Suit the shoe to the outfit. There are many popular pageant shoes which would suit any outfit like Chinese Laundry, Johnathan Kayne and Marc Defang shoes however, you don't need these to have these shoes to win! These styles are opened toed and criss cross, giving the ankle support when you are walking so you don’t lose your shoe on stage or the catwalk shoe wobble (you've seen the runway clips!). Personally I don’t think closed toed shoes wok on stage with evening wear, suiting more interview style, plus I always go for a shoe with a platform to take away the pressure of wearing high heels.

3. Make sure the colour is right
A nude shoe always works best, it's universal to any outfit choice because of it being neutral. Some nudes won’t work with different skin tones so find a colour close enough if nude doesnt suit. Of course a blinged shoe always works well as well, reflecting from the stage lights . A silver or AB Crystal shoe, which if you are creative you can create yourself (glue gun and Rhinestones!) Or Marc Defang do a crystallized version of their nude shoes. Glitter shoes are ok but tend to be very high and closed shoe, which if you can walk in them that’s great but you usually get the bambi on ice walk with them it’s best to leave them at home. You can of course match the colour shoes to your outfit but make sure you match the right shade as it will look odd if the colour is slightly off on stage.

4. Make sure you can walk in them!!
The most important part of shoe choosing, your walk defines you and shows the judges how you present yourself. If you are looking down at your feet every two seconds or trotting along in small tiny steps because you can't walk in your shoes then its going to get you marked down. Make sure you practice in your heels first, on different surfaces as different catwalks will have carpet or shiny laminate or a wooden floor. I always practice in my gym (studio is great to see in the mirror for poses) and it has a wooden floor which is best for getting over that slippery walk! Also if your shoes are new scor them with a knife at the bottom to give them some grip (of course don't carve the bottom of the shoe out, a light mark!)

You don’t have to pay the earth for shoes for the stage and interview but at least make sure they look presentable (clean, not torn, crystals intact or at least not noticeable), easy to walk in and suit your outfit choice. If you get all of these right then you are onto a winning walk!! Remember Ebay and Facebook for sale pages are great for grabbing a bargain, as well as asking other pageant girls where they got their shoes from. Don’t just buy a shoe because of it’s label but how it suits your feet and walking style.
